Nationality Requirements
Indian Nationals
Must be a citizen of India to apply for the IFoS examination.
Other Eligible Categories
Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Migrants Eligibility
Persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Educational Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following subjects: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, or a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or Engineering from a recognized university.
Final Year Students
Candidates appearing in their final year examination of qualifying degree are also eligible to apply, but they must submit proof of passing along with the detailed application form for the Main examination.

21 years as on August 1 of the examination year.
Maximum Age
32 years as on August 1 of the examination year. Age relaxations are applicable for reserved categories as per government rules.

Exam Pattern and Stages
The UPSC IFoS examination is conducted in three successive stages. Understanding the pattern is crucial for effective preparation.
Stage 1: Preliminary Examination
Objective type screening test consisting of two papers:
- Paper I: General Studies (200 marks)
- Paper II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) (200 marks)
Note: Paper II is qualifying in nature with minimum 33% marks required.
Stage 2: Main Examination
Descriptive type examination consisting of 6 papers:
- Paper I: General English (300 marks)
- Paper II: General Knowledge (300 marks)
- Papers III, IV, V, VI: Optional Subjects (200 marks each)
Stage 3: Personality Test/Interview
Carries 300 marks to assess the candidate’s personal suitability for a career in the Indian Forest Service.

Important: The Preliminary examination is only a screening test. The marks obtained in this stage are not counted for the final ranking. Only candidates who qualify the Prelims are allowed to appear for the Mains examination.
